What to Feed a Dog That Has Diarrhea

After consulting with your veterinarian about your dog’s diarrhea, they may have prescribed medication to help your sick dog. Even if this is the case, you may be wondering if there is something you can do to help remedy the situation with what you feed your dog. The answer is yes, food choices do make a difference. If your dog has loose stool, focus on giving it nutritious foods that are bland in taste, but high in fiber. Here are several foods that are good to give your dog if it has diarrhea or an upset stomach.

Chicken and Rice

This deliciously simple dish, when cooked without added salt or spices makes the perfect bland meal for your sick pup. Easy for your dog to digest, chicken and rice is also low in fat. If your dog is ill, white rice is recommended, as it is easier to digest.

Feeding plain, steel-cut oatmeal to your dog will help boost their fiber and help regulate their digestive system again. Here are a few other foods that can help get your furry friend back on track again:
  • Apple slices
  • Plain, canned pumpkin (not spiced)
  • Carrots
  • Beet pulp
  • Cooked sweet potatoes
  • Kale
  • Green beans

Additional Cooked Foods

Prescription Dog Food Several dog food brands on the market have created dog foods that are specifically designed to remedy common health issues such as diarrhea. Most of these specialized foods require a prescription from your veterinarian.

When to Feed a Dog That Has Diarrhea

Your dog’s gastrointestinal tract may need to rest after having a bout of diarrhea. When is the right time to give your dog food again? The exact answer to this may depend on the dog’s age and size, the underlying cause of the diarrhea, and the dog’s overall health. You may need to withhold food from a healthy adult dog for about 12 hours after diarrhea before giving them any of the foods mentioned above. Make sure your dog always has access to plenty of clean, fresh water. Do not withhold food for any length of time from puppies, senior dogs, toy breeds, and dogs with health issues.
