WellPet® LLC issued a recall for its recipe for large breed puppies on May 4, 2012. The recall was issued because of possible Salmonella contamination at Diamond® Pet Foods’ Gaston, South Carolina, plant where the product was produced.

While the majority of the company’s products are produced in its state-of-the-art manufacturing plant, this particular run was made at Diamond® Pet Food’s plant. After the recall, WellPet® LLC decided to no longer purchase any of its products from Diamond® Pet Foods.

The specific product included in the recall are:

  • 15- and 30-lb bags, as well as 5-oz sample bags, of Wellness Complete Health® Super5Mix® Large Breed Puppy dry dog food with “best by” dates of January 9, 2013 through January 11, 2013. You can find the dates on the bottom right-hand corner of the bags.

Pets infected with Salmonella display symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, and fever. Other signs that your pet has potentially come into contact with Salmonella include lethargy and loss of appetite. Humans can also become infected with Salmonella if they handle contaminated products or come into contact with a pet suffering from infection.

If you notice you or your pets showing any of the above signs, contact a health professional immediately.
