United Pet Group, based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, has issued a recall on June 22, 2010, of unexpired lots of the companies Pro-Pet® Adult Daily Vitamin Supplement tablets for dogs. The products affected have an expiration date of “6/13” or before. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is also aware of the recall and have reported it on its website.
Salmonella bacteria contamination was cited as the reason for the recall, as one of the lots of the product was found to be contaminated. In an “abundance of caution,” United Pet Group decided to recall all of the unexpired lots of the product. The product was shipped to and sold at various retailers nationwide, though the contaminated product has subsequently been removed from store shelves.
Salmonella infection in pets and humans can cause diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain. If consumers or their pets think they have been contaminated or have come into contact with contaminated product, they should seek the advice of a medical health professional or a veterinarian.
If consumers think they purchased any of the contaminated product, they should contact the place of purchase or United Pet Group by phone at 1-800-645-5154.
They can also file a complaint with a local consumer complaint coordinator about FDA-regulated pet food products.
