Keys Manufacturing Company recalled some of its Pig Ears for Pets Treats on May 3, 2011, as a result of a reported illness of a dog due to Salmonella infection in Missouri who had eaten the treats. The company and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are continuing the investigation into how the product became contaminated with the bacteria.
The products affected include Pigs Ears for Pets Treats 100-count cases shipped to distributors in the states of Pennsylvania, Virginia, Missouri, Iowa, Ohio, Illinois, Florida, Kentucky, Michigan, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana, Texas, and Minnesota between the dates of September 27 through October 6, 2010; November 1 through November 29, 2010; and January 3 through January 11, 2011.
Pets who suffer from Salmonella infection typically display lethargic behavior, diarrhea, abdominal issues, and elevated temperature. Humans can also be infected and show similar symptoms. If consumers think they or their pet have been infected with Salmonella bacteria, they should seek medical attention immediately.
Consumers who bought the recalled product can return it to
their place of purchase for a refund.
