Natural Balance® Pet Foods announced a recall of some of its dry dog foods Manufactured by Diamond® Pet Foods’ Gaston, South Carolina, plant on May 4, 2012. Salmonella contamination was listed as the cause for the recall.

The products affected include:

  • 5-lb bags of Natural Balance® Sweet Potato & Venison Dog, UPC 7-23633-88650-5, “best by” dates 12/12/12 through 12/13/12, and 3/12/13
  • 15-lb bags of Natural Balance® Sweet Potato & Venison Dog, UPC 7-23633-88615-4, “best by” dates of 3/5/13 through 3/6/13, 12/12/12 through 12/13/12, and 12/13/12 through 12/14/12
  • 28-lb bags of Natural Balance® Sweet Potato & Venison Dog, UPC 7-23633-88628-4, “best by” dates of 3/5/13 through 3/6/13, 3/7/13 though 3/8/13, 3/12/13, 12/12/12 through 12/13/12, and 12/13/12 through 12/14/12

Also included in the recall are the following Natural Balance® Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Dog products:

  • 5-lb bags with UPC 7-23633-78755-0, “best by” dates of 12/10/12 and 12/21/12 through 12/13/12
  • 15-lb bags with UPC 7-23633-78715-4, “best by” dates of 12/10/12 and 12/21/12 through 12/22/12
  • 28-lb bags with UPC 7-23633-78728-4, “best by” dates of 12/10/12 and 12/21/12 through 12/22/12

Other Natural Balance® products recalled include:

  • Sweet Potato & Bison Dog food products such as 5-lb bags with UPC 7-23633-65553-8, “best by” dates of 12/17/12 through 12/18/12 and 12/28/12 through 12/29/12
  • 15-lb bags with UPC 7-23633-61718-5, “best by” dates of 12/9/12, 12/17/12 through 12/18/12, and 12/28/12 through 12/29/12
  • and 28-lb bags with UPC 7-23633-63031-3, “best by” dates of 12/9/12, 12/17/12 through 12/18/12, and 12/28/12 through 12/29/12

Some final products that are part of the recall included:

  • 5-lb bags of Natural Balance® Vegetarian Dog with UPC 7-23633-80855-2, “best by” date 12/9/12
  • 28-lb bags of Natural Balance® Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Dog Large Breed Bites with UPC 7-23633-44443-9, “best by” dates of 12/12/12 and 12/20/12 through 12/21/12
  • 5-lb Natural Balance® Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Dog Small Breed Bites with UPC 7-23633-42300-7, “best by” date of 12/21/12
  • 5-lb bags of Natural Balance® Lamb Meal & Brown Rice Dog Small Breed Bites with UPC 7-23633-42301-4, “best by” date of 12/21/12

The recalled products may have been distributed in the U.S. states of Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, DC, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin, West Virginia, and Wyoming, as well as in Canada.

The symptoms of Salmonella infection include decreased appetite, lethargy, abdominal pain, fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, even up to bloody diarrhea. If your pet has consumed the products listed and shows these symptoms, take them to a veterinarian for treatment.
