IMS™ Trading Corp. issued a recall of its Cadet® Brand Chicken Jerky Treat products on January 9, 2013. This includes all retailers that sell the product within the U.S.
The recall was issued after the New York State Department of Agriculture and Marketing (NYSDAM) discovered low levels of an unapproved antibiotic within the treats. Initially, the recall was only for retailers in the state of New York, but IMS™ Trading Corp. decided to expand the recall to locations nationwide as a precaution.
The product was manufactured in China where the antibiotic is approved. IMS™ Trading Corp. went on to further say that while the antibiotic is not known to cause health issues among pets, it has decided to err on the side of caution and recall the affected product.
To hopefully prevent further instances, IMS™ Trading Corp. decided to institute a double testing program in the hopes of detecting the unapproved antibiotics before products reach retailer shelves. The testing itself will be based on scientifically developed and sound sampling of products.
