The Dangers of Salmonella
Both the dog and the handler are at risk for Salmonella poisoning if you have touched the treats without washing your hands after touching the product, or any surface that the product has touched.
In humans, Salmonella contamination will cause nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and a fever. In more serious cases, it can cause arterial infections, endocartis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation and urinary tract symptoms.
In your dog, look for symptoms of diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Other milder symptoms may include being lethargic, a decreased appetite, a fever and abdominal pain. Infected pets can carry Salmonella and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has eaten these treats and is showing any of these symptoms, take them to see their veterinarian right away.
