On February 22, 2013, Hy-Vee®, Inc. issued a recall of some of its Hy-Vee® dog food. The reason behind the recall was due to elevated levels of aflotoxin, a toxic compound found in contaminated corn. The toxic compound was found after a random test by the Iowa Department of Agriculture. The products were distributed to Hy-Vee® stores in the states of Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Manufactured at the Kansas City plant operated by Pro-Pet®, LLC, the affected product contained aflotoxin, which when consumed in large quantities can be harmful to pets. Symptoms of poisoning by aflotoxin include lethargy or sluggishness, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, and a yellow tint to the eyes or gums.

The following Hy-Vee® Complete Dog® Complete Nutrition products were a subject of the recall:

  • Green 34-lb bags with UPC 07545005647, lot number 29812KC, and a “best by” date of 11/24/13
  • Green 8-lb bags with UPC 07545005667, lot number 29812KC, and a “best by” date of 11/24/13
  • Green 4.4-lb bags with UPC 07545005665, lot number 29812KC, and a “best by” date of 11/24/13 and 11/25/13.
  • Hy-Vee® Complete Dog® Bites, Bones & Squares in yellow 20-lb bags with UPC 07545005680, lot number 29312KC, and a “best by” date of 11/19/13
  • Yellow 4.4-lb bags with UPC 07545005560, lot number 29312KC, and a “best by” date of 11/19/13.

Shoppers who purchased the product can return unused portions to any Hy-Vee®
