More than just packing a few things, taking a road trip with your pet will require a bit of preparation. For example, you need to make sure that your pet has an ID tag attached with your cellphone number on it. If you can get him or her microchipped, that is a great back up system.
Do a bit of research before you head out. Look at your route and see where there are emergency clinics along the way, just in case. Speaking of emergencies, protect your pets from harm in case there is a car accident by getting them a doggie seatbelt, a car barrier or a crate to put them in. Be sure to keep your pets safely in the backseat. Cesar Milan that putting your dog or cat in a crate is the safest way to go. This also gives your pet a place to sleep when you arrive at your destination.
Be sure and find out if the hotels you have chosen to stay at are pet-friendly, so that there are no surprises. To find out which hotels are pet-friendly, check out DogFriendly. Not only will they guide to pet-friendly hotels and campgrounds, they give you a listing of dog parks and beaches by state.
What to Bring
Be sure to bring your dog’s regular food with you to avoid having to switch foods along the way in case the store doesn’t have the food he is used to eating. It is a good idea to go ahead and separate his meals out in Ziploc bags for convenience. Next, you will need to bring a spill-proof water bowl and bottled water. Bring along any medications that you are giving your dog, as well as their documentation of shots. Write down the phone number of your veterinarian.
Bring along his regular toys, but pack few new toys to keep him or her entertained. ASPCA recommends bringing along a Kong® toy that you stuff with food to keep your dog happy. Go ahead and bring some long-lasting durable chew toys as well. Bringing them something to do may stop them from barking and pacing around. Pack some biscuits and treats for the road as well.
Don’t forget his leash. It may be a good idea to bring along an extra one just in case the one you have gets misplaced. If you plan on tying the dog outside, be sure to bring along a longer run as well. You may want to pack some old towels for you to use on your dog, in case you want to take him swimming at the beach.
Bring plenty of plastic bags for cleaning up after your pet. If you are traveling with a cat, be sure to bring along a litter box and cat litter. Go ahead and bring along some cleaning supplies just in case your pet has an accident in your car. To save yourself a headache, it would be a good idea to pick up a cargo area liner to protect your carpeting.
And there you have it. Now you can leave your home and head out on your grand adventure with confidence that your pet will remain safe and happy.
