Hiking With Dogs

A dog can be an excellent companion to accompany you on your hiking adventures. Most canines are more than ready to hit the trail when you are. Hiking with dogs is an excellent way for you and your dog to stay in shape together. As a bonus, the time you spend together will deepen your relationship. Here are a few basic guidelines to ensure you have a positive experience when hiking with your dog.

Etiquette for Hiking With Dogs

  1. The first thing you need to be sure of before selecting a place to go hiking is that they allow dogs on the land in the first place. Be sure to obey any restrictions such as staying away from areas that are marked as off limits.
  2. Your dog should be kept on a leash at all times while hiking. This is important because you want any other hikers you encounter on the trail to feel comfortable. Your dog being on a leash will also stop him from going off the path and chasing wildlife.
  3. Plan ahead and bring the items that your dog is going to need when out on the trail. This should include food, water, poop bags, and other comforts that may be specific to your canine.
  4. Clean up after your dog, under all circumstances. It is gross and irresponsible to leave your dog’s poop behind on the trail. You can bring poop bags with you, or bring along a tiny spade that you can use to bury your dog’s waste.
  5. Don’t make assumptions about other people’s dogs on the trail. Just because its tail is wagging, doesn’t mean it is happy and wants to be petted.
  6. Don’t imagine that since you love your dog, everyone else will too. Keep your canine under control so that strangers don’t feel threatened or afraid.
  7. Remember, leaving your dog shut inside of a closed vehicle for even a few minutes is dangerous. Don’t take risks when it comes to those that you love.
  8. Be sure to make many pit stops along your journey for you and your dog to rest. Give your dog water and an occasional treat during these times.
  9. Feeding your dog right before you go hiking may cause him to vomit. Either feed him 1 hour before you leave or wait until 30 minutes after you have returned home.

Final Thought

Before you leave home for your next adventure with your pup, make sure that he or she is healthy enough to hike in the first place. Take into account factors such as age, size, personality, and breed when making this determination.
