Hartz® Mountain Corporation announced a recall of its Hartz® brand Chicken Chews™ and Oinkies® Pig Skin Twists for dogs on January 25, 2013. The recall was issued after traces of an unapproved antibiotic were found in the products. The antibiotics in question were not approved for use in the United States.

The unapproved antibiotics were detected in samples by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSDAM) who reported its findings to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

The antibiotic poses no health concern for pets, but the product was removed from store shelves in an “abundance of caution” after hearing of the NYSDAM findings.

The specific products that were part of the recall include:

  • 5-, 8-, 16-, 24-, and 20-oz packages of Hartz® Chicken Chews™ Soft and Tenders
  • 7- and 16-oz packages of Hartz® Chicken Chews™ Soft and Tender Bite-sized products
  • Hartz® Oinkies® Pig Skin Twists wrapped in Chicken in 5-, 7-, 15-, and 20-pack sizes
