On July 26, 2013, Arthur Dogswell LLC voluntarily withdrew specific items of its Dogswell® and Catswell® duck and jerky treats. The reason for the recall was because of the possible presence of antibiotics not approved for use in the United States.
The recall was issued after it was learned that the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYSDAM) found trace amounts of the unauthorized antibiotic while testing samples of the product. While the antibiotic in question is legal to use in China, where the product was made, U.S. officials prohibit its use. No evidence exists pointing to potential problems from ingesting trace amount of the unapproved antibiotic.
The products affected include the following brands of Chicken Breast and Duck Breast jerky manufactured by the company:
- Breathies®
- Happy Heart®
- Happy Hips®
- Mellow Mut®
- Shape Up®
- Veggie Life®
- Vitality®
- Vitakitty®
All of the affected products have a “best by” date of January 28, 2015, stamped in black ink on the bottom right-hand side of the back of the package.
