Sunland, Inc. issued a recall for its Dogsbutter™ RUC with Flax PB for dogs on September 24, 2012. The product could possibly be contaminated with the Salmonella bacteria.

The affected product includes 16-oz jars of Dogsbutter™ RUC with Flax PB with UPC 003050 and that have the “best by” dates of 5/1/13 through 9/24/13 stamped on the jar’s label right below the lid. Retailers where Dogsbutter™ RUC with Flax PB can be found include Target and General Nutrition Center (GNC). The Dogbutter recall was issued as part of an expanded recall that included a large variety of human food products.

The recall was initiated after 29 people became infected with Salmonella in 18 different states, including Arizona, California, Connecticut, Illinois, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Texas, Virginia, and Washington.

Symptoms of Salmonella in pets include loss of appetite, lethargy, fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Pet owners and those who come into contact with infected pets can also become infected. Pet owners should seek the advice of a medical professional if they think they or their pets have been contaminated with Salmonella.

Consumers who purchased any of the recalled product should discard of any 
unused portions in a covered trash receptacle immediately.
