Every dog lover knows the best part of any pet is the companionship and love they give. Dogs have a way of warming your life and their affection can be energizing.
But one of the worst parts of dog ownership is cleaning up their shedding hair. Let’s be honest – it gets everywhere.
Dogs shed. Some dogs shed a lot. But there are some breeds of dog that shed very little if at all. These breeds can be easier to clean up after, and some of them are more tolerable to those suffering from dog allergies.
We’ve put together a list of breeds of dogs that don’t shed so you can get an idea of which dogs might be a fit for your family or lifestyle.
Why Seek Dogs That Don’t Shed?
Honestly, part of this question is wrong. There are dogs that shed less, and there are some that shed a lot. You wouldn’t say that people shed, though you’re certain to find some hairs in the bathroom or in drains.
Some dogs will not leave little tumbleweeds all around your home, but all dogs are going to shed at least a bit. Dogs that don’t shed much are going to make keeping your home fur free much easier though.
Anyone who has had a Golden Retriever or Husky knows that they are going to have periods of time where they cover your home in fur. Many people look for dogs that don’t shed for this very reason. It mostly comes down to lifestyle choices. Are you comfortable with the amount of cleanup, maintenance and grooming you’re going to have to do with a dog like that?
There are still others who can have allergies to dogs, and a dog that sheds less can help with that. Though, it is not actually dog hair that causes allergies. Dander causes allergic reactions in humans. Dander is the product of dead skin particles that become an airborne dust. Once breathed in, this dust can cause sneezing, congestion, chest tightness or even skin irritation.
If a person has allergies to dogs, it’s important to realize having a dog that sheds less will not solve their problem. Though, the maintenance of a dog that doesn’t shed will probably help alleviate many symptoms.
Which Breed of Dog Doesn’t Shed?
Again, it’s worth noting that all dogs shed, but these dogs will only shed minimally.
Small Dogs
Toy Poodle
Just like their full-size relative, the toy poodle is a great choice if you are looking for a dog that doesn’t shed. They also make fun companions since they are very eager to please. Like their full size relative, they are very smart. They almost know how cute they are and that they can get away with a lot because of it.
Italian Greyhound
The Italian Greyhound is one of the easiest dogs to groom because they barely shed. Their coat is very fine and will require only an occasional rubdown to keep its luster. They are also very sensitive to cold weather though since their coats are so fine.
Shih-Tzu
The Shih-Tzu is a popular breed that originates from China. For as popular as they are, they also require a lot of maintenance. A Shih-Tzu should be brushed at least once a day, but their attitude and playfulness more than make up for the task grooming.
Medium Dogs
Portuguese Water Dog
This hypoallergenic breed is used to putting in a full day’s work. They were originally used by Portuguese fishermen to help pull in nets and other equipment. This has given them webbed toes and a muscular build, but they also shed very minimally and will require only a trim occasionally. They have exceptional stamina, so make sure you can keep up.
Schnauzer
The Standard Schnauzer is probably best known for their distinctive mustache. They are also fiercely loyal companions who are used to being put to work. These dogs were used as herders, so be sure to give them plenty of exercise.
Whippet
The Whippet is a very sweet looking dog. They have very dopey eyes and a cheerful disposition. Their coat is also very easy to care for. A brushing occasionally, is usually enough for them, though you’ll want to be sure to give these guys a lot of attention. They love to run and are unrivaled sprinters in the dog world.
Large Dogs
Saluki
The beautiful Saluki requires very little grooming. They are the royal dog of Egypt, and their stately appearance shows it. What you might not see is their incredible speed. Saluki have been known to have explosive speed and energy, so keep your eyes on this one.
Irish Water Spaniel
The Irish Water Spaniel sheds very minimally. They are ideal for people with allergies, but their coat does need some maintenance. They should get a good brushing often and a bath is a good idea too. The Irish Water Spaniel loves to play and will crave a lot of exercise. This makes them a great choice for an active household.
Poodle
The Standard Poodle is a popular non-shedding dog. These dogs have gotten a kind of snooty reputation lately, so it’s somewhat hard to remember that they were originally used in hunting. They were valuable companions for bird hunters and are exceptionally intelligent, so be sure to keep them occupied.
Golden Doodle
The Golden Doodle is a recent designer breed that was mixed from a Poodle and a Golden Retriever. These dogs shed very little since they get most of their coat characteristics from their Poodle side. They enjoy a reputation of being a lovely family dog since both the Poodle and Retriever make very loyal and loving companions. This breed loves to socialize too, so they make great additions to households.
While non-exhaustive, hopefully this list of dogs that don’t shed has given you an idea of which could be a good fit for your home. If you’re looking for a companion that won’t make a mess, any of these dogs will be a good choice.
