On December 6, 2011, Cargill® Animal Nutrition recalled two of its brands of dry dog food manufactured at its Lecompte, Louisiana, facility. The recall was issued due to elevated aflatoxin levels within the recalled dog food.
Included in the recall were four River Run™ and three Marksman™ products. For River Run™ the products include 50-lb bags of Professional Formula HI-NRG 24-20 and 27-18 Dog Food. Also included in the recall for River Run™ are 40- and 50-lb bags of 21% Protein and Hi-Pro No-Soy Dog Food. For the Marksman™ brand the recall includes 40-lb bags of 24% Protein/20% Fat, and 20% Protein/10% Fat Dog Food. In addition to these, 40- and 50-lb bags of Marksman™ 28% Protein/18% Fat Dog Food are being recalled. All of the affected products have the lot numbers 4K0335 through 4K0365, LL0335 through LL0365, 4K1001 through 4K1335, and LL1001 through LL1335.
The recalled dog food products were shipped to retailers and distributors in the states of Kansas, Missouri, Northeast Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Western Kentucky, Southeast Indiana, Southern Illinois, Hawaii, and limited areas of California and Florida. The product was also shipped to the territories of Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
While naturally occurring in pet food, elevated levels of aflatoxin can cause sluggishness or lethargy, loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, and a yellow tint to the eyes or gums. If your pet shows these signs, you should take them to a veterinarian.
