Canidae® Pet Foods announced a recall of some of its dry food formulas on May 5, 2010. The recall was initiated after Diamond® Pet Foods revealed possible contamination of products at its Gaston, South Carolina, plant where the Canidae® product was manufactured.
Salmonella can cause lethargy, loss of appetite, fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea in pets and can even infect humans through contact with contaminated food, its packaging, and infected pets. If you think you or your pet have been infected by the Salmonella bacteria, seek medical help immediately.
The affected products include:
- Canidae® Dog, All Life Stages; Chicken Meal & Rice; Lamb Meal & Rice; and Platinum dog foods.
To distinguish which products have been affected, look for a number “3” in the ninth position and an “X” in either the 10th or 11th position on the production code. The “best by” dates to look for include December 9, 2012 through January 31, 2013. The products were distributed to locations in Florida, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Tennessee, though distribution to other locations may have occurred.
