Shopping guide for best dog doors
Last Updated January 2019
Consider the Size
Before purchasing a dog door, consider what breed your pooch is. A dog’s size is a factor, which depends on the breed.
Avoid purchasing a small dog door just because you have a puppy. Remember that your puppy won’t be small forever, and will outgrow the door. For this reason, your pet door should have an opening that will fit the dog once they have matured.
In order for you to determine the size of dog door to buy, measuring your dog is necessary. There are 4 measurements for you to take.
Height is the first. Measure from the dog’s paws to the lower part of the chest to the highest part of the shoulders. Allow 2” at the top of the shoulders.
Measure the width of one shoulder blade to the other, giving a 2 inch allowance.
The weight of the dog is also a factor. Buy a dog door whose weight correlates with the recommended weight of the door.
Make sure that the pet door is going accommodates the thickness of your door or wall.
Safety and Security
While it is important to buy an energy-efficient dog door, you shouldn’t overlook the level of security that the door offers. Consider the door’s locking system. Some pet doors have metal locking covers, while others do not.
Quality Materials
To make sure that the door is going to last, be sure to buy a dog door that is made of tough and premium quality-materials that are resistant to corrosion and weather. The flaps should be flexible but safe.
Door Flaps or Cover
Your dog door’s flaps should be sturdy enough to withstand strong gusts of wind. Going with a door that has double flaps will provide extra insulation from harsh weather conditions.
Structure of the Frame
Is the frame made of plastic or aluminum? Will it be sufficient to prevent heat losses, and is it strong enough to deter chewing from your dog?
