The reason the Rockford, Illinois, company recalled the product was due to potential Salmonella contamination. Shipped to retailers in the states of Arizona, California, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin, the products were distributed between November 1 and November 12, 2012. On February 22, 2013, Hy-Vee®, Inc. issued a recall of some of its Hy-Vee® dog food. The reason behind the recall was due to elevated levels of aflotoxin, a toxic compound found in contaminated corn. The toxic compound was found after a random test by the Iowa Department of Agriculture. On February 21, 2013, Kasel Associated Industries expanded an earlier recall. The original recall was issued for some of the company’s products manufactured between 4/20/12 and 9/19/12 due to the products potentially being contaminated by Salmonella bacteria. Hartz® Mountain Corporation announced a recall of its Hartz® brand Chicken Chews™ and Oinkies® Pig Skin Twists for dogs on January 25, 2013. The recall was issued after traces of an unapproved antibiotic were found in the products. The antibiotics in question were not approved for use in the United States.
